The ground you can't make up staying in a hotel

I've spent the last two decades building teams and boarding planes.

Two proptech companies. Two exits. Then a run leading large teams at IWG and the Instant Group at scale. Global commercial real estate. Airports, sales motions, boardrooms, back-to-back Zooms across time zones. It built a life, and it built a career, and I would not trade any of it.

If I'm honest, they weren't the kind of experiences I'm going to tell my grandkids about.

What I keep noticing about founders and leaders

I lead a chapter of Post-Exit Founders, and I facilitate two PEF Forums — one for post-exit founders navigating what's next, one for founders back in the arena building the next thing. I'm also a GEM 1500 Mastermind Ambassador, working with Drew Meyers's community of startup executives at scale. Different groups, same pattern.

The founders and executives in these rooms have already done the hard thing. They've built something. They've sold something, or they're building the next one. They can access almost any conference, any dinner, any advisor they want. Access isn't the problem.

What they can't easily get is ground quiet enough for the actual conversation. The one about identity, purpose, capital, cofounders, the marriage, the next chapter, the thing they can't put anywhere else. Those conversations don't happen at a hotel bar. They don't happen on a Zoom. They don't happen at a networking event, no matter how curated.

They happen when you leave your routine behind, land somewhere quiet, and stay long enough for the first layer of self-presentation to fall off.

Why Jen and I bought River & Roots Ranch

We bought a 246-acre ranch along the St. Marys River in Northeast Florida, and the more I lead groups there — and the more I watch other retreat leaders do the same — the more I realize we bought it partly on instinct for exactly this.

A handcrafted cypress log ranch house. A chef's kitchen for farm-to-table dinners. Miles of soft trails through hardwood hammock and open pasture. A mile-plus of river frontage. Resident horses. Archery, fishing, kayaking, forest walks. Some of the darkest night skies in the region. Forty minutes from Jacksonville, and about a hundred years away from your inbox.

But the ranch's real feature isn't any single amenity. It's what happens on the drive in. The county road turns to sand. The gates close behind you. By the time you're on the porch, the meeting you were about to have has already shifted register.

That's the ground I couldn't build in a hotel.

What a retreat at River & Roots can look like

Small groups. Days, one to three nights, unhurried. A guided physical experience each day — a hike, a paddle, a ride, archery — because bodies that have moved together talk more honestly than bodies that have only sat together. Farm-to-table meals. Fireside at night. Dark sky above. Enough time for the first layer to fall off, and then some.

Whoever holds the conversation — you as the leader of your own retreat, a facilitator you bring in, or me — the ranch is set up to make that easier. It's a container designed for real work, not a nice venue that hopes to be one.

What we're building

Peak Adventures runs a few of our own retreats at River & Roots each year, and I facilitate for a handful of groups whose leaders bring their people to us. The property is open for both.
